10/07/2010 - I’m A Londoner gets 4-star review from thepublicreviews.com!
In the shadow of City Hall and adjacent to London Bridge is a concrete horseshoe amphitheatre that could easily be mistaken for an elaborate side entrance to the lower levels of the Mayor’s headquarters. But this summer it hosts a series of free events in theatre, music and film. One such event is the wonderful production of I’m a Londoner, held in the depths of the sunken open-air theatre. The venue is unique and perfectly proportioned to effectively use its natural acoustics to full effect.
The production is based around a series of character monologues from eight men and women, most of whom have arrived in London to make their fortunes and have quickly hit reality. Among them is the Belarusian fast food seller who is dodging visa officials and trying to make some extra money to survive, the Scottish homeless man who confronts the audience with some awkward truths about how he is ignored and marginalised from society, and the young drunk Nigerian girl who is isolated from her family because she does not wish to adhere to their customs and behaviours.
Each monologue is refreshingly short yet charming and entertaining, each overlapping each other with character interaction such as the homeless man asking the father of the next scene for spare change. Some are touching, some are more amusing than others, but all raise some important points and opinions about what it is to be ‘a Londoner’. London is multi-cultural and transient, historic yet one of the most modern and influential in the world. People from all over the world move to the city to seek their fame and fortune, and an interesting selection of these people are represented in this production in a funny and truthful portrayal of the layers of modern London. ****

“In monologue style and interactive with the audience, you immediately recognise these stereotypes, which are played out hilariously – the born again Christian and the posh fashionista as well as the immigrant father misunderstanding his second generation daughter. The show particularly wants to express the stories of those that never get heard – the people you see every day but don’t know – the vendor who offers out the Evening Standard everyday at your local tube station, the lovestruck Italian pianist, and the homeless person you pass by on the way home and the Eastern European who sells you a burger at 2am on a Thursday night. It aims to show you their side of life in the exciting, fast-paced but at times cutthroat city – so in turn these stereotypes are performed explicitly and then destroyed. The show holds up a mirror to our city lifestyle with its clash of cultures and varied people. A worthwhile opportunity to get to know your London better, and with plenty of laughs. If you thought you knew London, think again.”

“Last night I had the pleasure of catching the I’m A Londoner’ play at the Scoop, a unique outdoor amphitheatre next to Tower Bridge, which is putting on variety of free shows over the summer months.
The show kicked off at 7pm, which just happens to be my supper time…a good excuse to put together a nice hamper of tasty treats along with some Cava to enjoy while we watched the al fresco show. And it was all rather tasty actually, I tried to hide the booze when the actor portraying the down and out drunken bum came on…he looked too fucking real.
I’m A Londoner featured nine characters in 8 different short plays, who all had their own story to tell and reasons for ending up in the coolest city in the world. The setting for the show was a park in the heart of London and each of the 9 characters sold their story well. They were believable and had me engrossed into what was happening in their lives.
All of the actors were playing the part of people that we could all pass by every single day in London. In fact they were because I have came across real versions of them all many times during my time living in this crazy city. Whether it be, the down and out drunk army guy with mental problems, the ex banker turned religious fanatic aids victim, the love struck Italian, the Evening Standard Seller or the fucked up Nigerian girl. I felt their pain, it felt real, which is good acting in my book.
I’m A Londoner at times was funny, bittersweet, thought provoking, poignant and above all else it was entertaining. And thankfully there was almost a full house at the Scoop last night to enjoy the show. Tonight Friday 18 is the last performance and I would highly recommend getting yourself along to see this wonderful show for yourself while you can. Take a break from your television or laptop and experience something different for a change.”
